Microfinance in the Midst of a Conflict: A Report From the Middle East
Brandsma, Judith
The Haverford Microfinance and Impact Investing Initiative (MI3) is pleased to welcome Judith Brandsma to campus to speak on her spearheading work to increase financial access in the Middle East. Judith is a former senior staff member of the World Bank/IFC where she put microfinance 'on the map' with a series of bi-annual stocktaking surveys on the state of microfinance. Her efforts in the region have focused on:
working with existing banks and microfinance institutions to enhance the provision of financial services to the poor (all MENA countries);
establishing new financial institutions in countries where existing providers were not able/willing to increase financial access on a larger scale (Palestine, Yemen, Jordan, Syria); and
redesigning the legal and regulatory environment in those countries where the legal framework was an obstacle (Syria, Yemen).
She is currently working on a mobile bank in Egypt and a G2P payment system in Yemen. Her talk, "Microfinance in the Midst of Conflict: A Report from the Middle East" will discuss how the various institutions and the people they serve have been responding to the challenges and opportunities presented by the recent events in the region.
Presentation delivered by Judith Brandsma on April 5, 2012 at Haverford College, KINSC, Sharpless Auditorium.
